Build the correct mental model for OpenTelemetry as a vendor-neutral telemetry framework rather than an observability backend.

Why this matters in production
OpenTelemetry is valuable only when telemetry preserves enough identity, context and semantics to answer a production question under pressure. A dashboard that looks populated is not proof that instrumentation is correct. This lesson is complete when you can explain what data should exist, where it should travel, what can break, and what evidence proves the design works.
OpenTelemetry standardizes how applications and infrastructure produce and move telemetry; it does not replace the backend where you query and visualize data.
Separate instrumentation from collection and collection from storage so applications are not tightly coupled to one vendor.
Think in four stages: instrument code, generate signals, collect/process them, and export them to one or more backends.
Use OTLP and semantic conventions as interoperability boundaries, not as an excuse to capture every possible attribute.
Production success means telemetry still has identity, context and operational meaning after crossing services and collectors.
A useful review habit is to separate three questions:
What should be true? Define the intended telemetry behavior.
What evidence proves it? Use a known request, metric, log record, Collector counter or backend query.
What can make the evidence misleading? Sampling, duplicate collection, missing resource identity, bad context propagation, transformation, queueing, drops and backend translation can all change what you see.
Production rules
Prefer stable, low-cardinality identity such as service.name, service.namespace, service.version and deployment environment over ad-hoc labels.
Keep exporter/backend credentials out of application business logic where a Collector or platform boundary can own them.
Treat telemetry as production data: apply privacy, security, retention, cost and data-residency controls.
Avoid adding attributes just because they are available. Every field should answer a real debugging, SLO, routing or governance question.
Test the negative path. You should know what the application and Collector do when the backend is slow, DNS fails, credentials expire, a processor drops data, or a sampling policy changes.
A framework being instrumented twice and producing duplicate spans or metrics.
Trace context being lost at a custom HTTP/message boundary.
A Collector component being configured but not connected to a service.pipelines entry.
High-cardinality attributes making metrics expensive or unusable.
Sensitive data being emitted and only discovered after it reaches storage.
Export queues growing because the backend is slower than the incoming telemetry rate.
Sampling being blamed for missing data that was actually refused or dropped.

Review checklist
Can you state which OpenTelemetry component owns this behavior?
Is the data model stable enough for the dashboard/alert contract you are creating?
Are names and attributes based on semantic conventions where available?
What is the expected cardinality?
What is the expected telemetry volume and cost?
What happens when the next hop is unavailable?
Which privacy/security policy applies?
How will you detect silent telemetry loss?

Key takeaway
OpenTelemetry standardizes how applications and infrastructure produce and move telemetry; it does not replace the backend where you query and visualize data. Use OpenTelemetry as an engineered production data path, not as a checkbox integration.
