Understand incident management as two simultaneous jobs: restore the user outcome and coordinate the human response safely.
Operating model
DETECT → DECLARE → COMMAND → TRIAGE → MITIGATE → VERIFY → RECOVER → LEARN
What you should be able to do
- Name one incident owner
- State user impact in one sentence
- Create a shared incident channel or record
- Choose mitigation before deep optimization
- Verify recovery with user-facing evidence
Deep dive
Incident response has two tracks
Technical responders investigate and mitigate the failure while the incident-management structure keeps ownership, priorities, communication and decisions clear. A technically strong team can still lose time if nobody owns coordination.
Mitigation is not the same as diagnosis
During active user impact, the first objective is normally to reduce impact or restore service. A complete root-cause explanation can wait until the system is stable, provided evidence needed for later analysis is preserved.
Declare before certainty
An incident declaration is a coordination mechanism, not an admission that the team already understands the fault. Early declaration creates a shared place, roles, timestamps, escalation and an explicit severity.
Control blast radius
Every emergency action should be evaluated for potential impact. A rollback, traffic shift or failover can be the right mitigation, but it should be scoped, observable and reversible where possible.
Verify from the user path
A graph turning green is useful evidence, but recovery should be verified through the actual customer journey, critical API, synthetic check or other user-centered signal.
Response checklist
- Name one incident owner
- State user impact in one sentence
- Create a shared incident channel or record
- Choose mitigation before deep optimization
- Verify recovery with user-facing evidence
Common failure modes
- Waiting for perfect certainty before declaring
- Letting every responder make independent production changes
- Treating “pod is Running” as proof that customers recovered
