What the exam expects you to recognize

65 presented questions: 50 scored and 15 unscored
130-minute exam duration
Multiple-choice and multiple-response questions
Scaled score 100–1,000; minimum passing score 720
Compensatory scoring: pass the overall exam, not every domain independently
Official domain weights: Secure 30%, Resilient 26%, High-Performing 24%, Cost-Optimized 20%
Target candidate: about one year of hands-on AWS solution-design experience

Decision table

Requirement / clue	Architecture direction
Start here if you already use AWS	Take the diagnostic first; use weak domains to drive study order
New to AWS	Study AWS Cloud Engineering Pro in parallel with this exam-prep track
Exam readiness	Use timed mocks plus balanced domain scores, not lesson completion alone

Hands-on reinforcement

The SAA exam is architecture-focused rather than a coding exam, but a small amount of CLI/IaC practice makes service behavior memorable.

Bash

# Verify your AWS CLI identity before any hands-on lab
aws sts get-caller-identity

# Keep labs in a non-production account/profile
aws configure list
aws configure list-profiles

Scenario reasoning exercise

A question gives you several technically possible AWS designs. Before selecting one, write down:

Hard requirement — what must be true?
Failure/security/performance/cost boundary — what is being optimized?
Service family — identity, network, compute, storage, database, integration, analytics, or governance?
Operational constraint — does the question explicitly ask for minimal management or automation?
Why the distractors fail — do they violate a requirement, solve a different problem, or add unnecessary complexity?

Common exam traps

Memorizing service definitions without scenario practice
Treating 720/1000 as a simple 72% raw-score target
Ignoring multiple-response questions
Using exam dumps instead of original practice scenarios

Quick revision

State the primary use case for each service in the decision table.
Name one requirement that would make each alternative wrong.
Draw the architecture from memory.
Complete the related practice set on the certification dashboard.

Exam tip

When two answers both work technically, look for the one that best satisfies the explicit requirement: least operational overhead, highest availability, lowest cost, fastest recovery, or strongest security.
